Office Reset: Simple Tweaks for Maximum Productivity

Your office has a huge impact on your focus, energy and motivation!

Our surroundings have a profound impact on our mental state. When a space is cluttered, it can create a sense of overwhelm and chaos. On the other hand, a clean, organized, and well-arranged space can promote clarity, focus, and a sense of calm. By intentionally transforming your environment, you’re setting the stage for improved productivity, creativity, and overall well-being.

Here's the good news: you don't need a full makeover to feel better at your desk. A few intentional resets can dramatically improve how your workspace supports you instead of draining you. Below are simple realistic tweaks I use with clients all the time.

Make your office feel better quickly:

  • Clear your primary work surface. Paper stacks can be moved to a project box or an action folder. Random supplies can be stored in a drawer or organizational accessory. Create a clear area for what you want to work on today. The aim is to create a functional area, not for perfection. A space to add the things you want to focus on now.

  • Create work, supply and reference zones. Make sure your essential items are within arms reach. Items used daily like pens, highlighters, stapler, notebook should be where you can grab them effectively. Organize and purge before buying organizational supplies. Is your calendar open or quickly available to access for goal setting entries?

  • Is your desk, your screens, and your chair in the correct position to support you comfortably? Do you need to change how your desk is facing to feel more in a command position?  Do you need to face it away from distractions? Is it just time for a change? Is your chair in a comfortable position to take tension off of your back? Do you use multiple screens and if so are they placed in positions that work well for you?

  • Is the lighting in your office area sufficient for focus? Natural lighting is best but not always accessible. A desk lamp or an artificial sun lamp can give you more energy to complete your tasks. Do you need to add a light filtering or landscape curtain to enhance the space? I have a curtain with a mountain and lake on it so I can block out the snowy days here in WNY. 

  • Add items to your office that will inspire you. Think about adding a plant or soft rug. Maybe use lemon or orange or other invigorating essential oil. Or a lavender or eucalyptus for stress reduction. Do you have a photo or meaningful object in your office? How about a saying that means something to you. My middle monitor has a label at the bottom that says “Make Plans. Be Flexible.”

  • If your desk or office area is overloaded with too many visual distractions, choose your favorites. Keep the items that inspire you and re-home or toss the rest.

  • A deep clean of your desktop, dusting of your pictures, awards, etc, mopping/vacuuming of the floor and cleaning of your monitors will also give a fresh feel to your newly set up office. Feel free to use your favorite smelling cleaning sprays. Organize, purge and clean the inside of your drawers and closets if you are feeling inspired ;)

I tend to change around my office every 6 months or so just to give myself a fresh start when I'm feeling stuck. What changes can you make to inspire you to get the work done that you need to do? Don't underestimate the difference an office refresh can make!
